Castle Rock: A Small Town with a Big Heart

Castle Rock has the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of a small town community combined with the amenities of a big city and views of Colorado's most interesting and magnificent scenery. The town of Castle Rock is one of the most urban areas of Douglas County, but it is set between the plains and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, allowing its residents to enjoy spectacular views and access to some of Colorado's most beautiful parks and endless opportunities for outdoor activities.
The town is named after a prominent butte of rock to its north, which is shaped like a castle tower. It is possible to climb to the top of this rock to obtain some of the best views of the surrounding area. In addition to the castle shaped rock, there are numerous dramatic outcrops of rock that form intriguing shapes, as well as some beautiful areas of meadow and ponderosa pine forest.
Castle Rock was chosen as the county seat for Douglas County in 1874, when the county lines were adjusted. The site was chosen because it was in the center of the newly redrawn county.
The Castle Rock area was once the home of some of the local Native American Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes. In 1862, however, the land was opened up for settlement. At this time, rumors were circulating that there was gold in the area around what is now Denver. Many of the first settlers came to the area in search of their fortune.
One of the original settlers was Jeremiah Gould, who owned the land just to the south of the rock that would eventually give Castle Rock its name. There were only a few buildings in the settlement at this time, inhabited by cowboys, gold prospectors and various workers. Gould donated 120 acres of land to the growing town in 1874, allowing the new county seat to grow into a town that was worthy of its title.
The Castle Rock Historical Museum provides an interesting account of local history.
Properties in Castle Rock range from beautiful, historic houses to newly constructed homes. Castle Rock is still a growing town, with a steadily increasing population. It has some of the most affordable housing in the region, although there is a wide range of housing options within the community.
Castle Rock is a popular neighborhood for people who work at the nearby Denver Tech Center, although it is also possible to commute into downtown Denver. It is also an attractive location for families with young children, due to the friendly small town atmosphere and the huge range of local amenities.
Castle Rock sits within Douglas County, which has one of the best school systems in the Denver area. There are nine elementary schools attended by children living in Castle Rock, as well as the Mesa and Castle Rock middle schools, and the Castle View, Douglas County and Daniel C. Oakes high schools.
Castle Rock has its own golf course and a recreation center that offers a range of classes and activities as well as providing fitness and sports facilities including a swimming pool and gym. The town also contains a large amount of open space, with a selection of more than 20 different parks including Castlewood Canyon State Park, as well as a variety of different trails and green areas.
The historic Downtown area of Castle Rock is full of excellent restaurants and interesting shops. It is within easy reach of all the residential neighborhoods around the town. Many local festivals and events are held in Downtown Castle Rock, although other parts of the town also have their own events. One of the favorites is the Starlighting celebration, held each year in November, when crowds gather to watch Santa light a star mounted on top of the castle rock.
