The downtown area of Denver is the busy heart of the city. Denver's downtown area is the tenth largest in the United States, and it contains plenty of entertainment, shopping and recreational facilities. It also has some amazing views of the Rocky Mountains, ensuring that residents of this urban area can still enjoy the beauty of Colorado, despite being surrounded by all the amenities of a major city center.
Downtown Denver is divided into two halves: the modern downtown area and the historic Lower Downtown. The Lower Downtown area is the historic part of Downtown Denver. It is characterized by red brick buildings, many of which were built after the area was ravaged by fire in 1863. The eastern half of the downtown area is full of skyscrapers and contemporary buildings.
The Lower Downtown area of Denver, which is commonly known as LoDo, is the oldest neighborhood in the city. It was the site of the original settlement that began when people came to the region in the 19th century in search of gold. The LoDo neighborhood is one of the best examples of urban redevelopment in Denver. Development in the area has been in line with its historic character and has encouraged it to develop as a mixed use neighborhood on a pedestrian scale. The lower downtown area today is one of the busiest and most exciting neighborhoods in the region.
Downtown Denver is full of shops, art galleries and restaurants, but it also has a selection of residential properties, predominantly stylish lofts and luxurious apartments.
LoDo is a mixed use neighborhood. In addition to its residential properties, it contains some of the best shops, restaurants and entertainment venues in Denver. LoDo is a popular place for residents of the Denver area to enjoy a night out. The neighborhood has an abundance of bars, nightclubs and other venues. The LoDo neighborhood is now one of the most popular locations for people seeking an urban lifestyle in Denver. Downtown Denver also attracts commuters and visitors for work and entertainment purposes from across the Denver region.
The neighborhood is most popular with young professionals who want to live right in the heart of Denver. LoDo is a hub of cultural events and entertainment in the city. Attractions within the LoDo area include Denver's Museum of Contemporary Art and the Children's Museum of Denver. It is also the location of two of the major sporting venues in the city, Coors Field and the Pepsi Center arena.
The 16th street mall is one of the most interesting commercial areas in the neighborhood. This promenade runs for the length of 16 blocks, with shops, boutiques, restaurants and outdoor cafes along either side. The huge Tabor Center mall lies along this street, as does the Denver Pavilions, which is the perfect place to see a movie on an evening out.
The LoDo neighborhood has a very active community. There is a non profit neighborhood and business association, the LoDo District Inc. and a residential association, the Lower Downtown Neighborhood Association. These associations help to ensure that the neighborhood retains its unique and exciting character.
