The land on which the gardens stand was once owned by Colonel King Hudson and his wife, Evelyn Leigh Hudson. The Hudsons ran a restaurant, The Country Kitchen, from the site of what is now The Inn, but they also took great care of their property, ensuring that the riverbank lost none of its natural beauty, and even extending their land from the original five acres. The Country Kitchen was opened in 1942, and it remained open until 1962. They then leased the property to The North Woods Inn, which continued to operate a restaurant on the site until 1997.
