Lakewood is one of the largest incorporated cities in the Colorado region, in terms of population. It lies just to the west of Denver, within Jefferson County. The Lakewood area first began to be developed in 1889. The population grew steadily as the settlement expanded, but it was not until 1969 that Lakewood was incorporated as a city.

Residents of Lakewood benefit from access to a wide range of different recreational facilities, including four recreation centers, two golf courses, a selection of community swimming pools, a community center and a wide variety of art galleries.
